Laminate: Manufactured from layers of plastic wounded to particleboard or kraft paper. Formica is a trademarked term that has become a generic word for laminate.
Pros/cons:
Less expensive
Stain resistant
Low maintenance
Wide range of colors and decorative styles and edges (for example, Jonathan Adler's Formica collection)
Not heat resistant
Can crack
Hard to repair
Does not age well
Bacteria resistant because its nonporous, though bacteria and dirt can get trapped in seams
Scratches and burns can ruin laminate countertops - never cut on counter nor set hot pots or pans
How to clean and maintain Laminate:
For daily cleaning, use dishsoap, warm water and a soft cloth. Rinse cloth in clean water and wipe down after. Finally, dry with a soft cloth.
Don’t use too much water when cleaning.
Use a soft toothbrush to clean the seams or edging
Do not use acidic cleaner or tub/tile cleaner
For greasy build-up, use 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water
Remove stains by mixing baking soda with a mild household cleaner into a paste. Apply it to the stain and let it sit for five minutes (can be longer for tougher stains). Rinse with a soft cloth. Do not scrub because baking soda can create fine scratches on the laminate.
Can use a gel gloss sealant to seal and shine laminate counters
